Property tax relief in Arizona: who can get it

Arizona offers several ways to lower property taxes on the home you live in. Most are handled by your county assessor, and each has its own rules. Here's who each option is for.

Veterans with a disability rating

Veterans rated 100% disabled by the VA can have their primary home fully exempt. Veterans with lower ratings may get a smaller reduction.

Seniors 65 and older

Seniors can freeze their home's taxable value, and those with very low income can get a refund of part of the property tax or rent they paid.

Widows and widowers

A surviving spouse who owns their home may qualify for a reduction in assessed value. Surviving spouses of 100% disabled veterans may keep the veteran's full exemption.

People with disabilities

Homeowners who are totally and permanently disabled may qualify for a reduction. People receiving SSI may also qualify for the property tax refund credit.

Renters with very low income

Renters 65 and older, or on SSI, can claim a refund for part of the rent they paid, since rent includes property tax.

Good to know

  • Most exemptions are filed with your county assessor, and some must be renewed.
  • Income and property value limits change each year. Check the official page for current limits.
  • You can only claim one personal exemption, but a value freeze or refund credit may be combined with it.

Rules, limits and deadlines change. Each program page links to the official source for current details. Use the Arizona benefits finder to check your situation.
